
Awards
Over
the past 25 years, the ensemble has received many prizes for its work.
Most recently it was awarded:
·The
prestigious Ernst von Siemens Music Prize for life time achievement
(June 1999)
The Siemens Prize is given for lifetime achievement; the Arditti
Quartet has earned it by completely transforming the role of the string
quartet in contemporary composition. Since its launch in 1972, the prizes
recipients have included Karajan, Bernstein, Pollini, Abbado, Menuhin,
Britten, Messiaen, Lutoslawski, Boulez and Stockhausen, to name just a
few. The Ardittis are thus in world-class company. This is the first time
it has gone to an ensemble and also the first time it has been awarded
to a specialist performer of contemporary music. Classical

·The
complete Mode recordings of Berio's Sequenza's, on which Irvine has recorded
the violin Sequenza and ex-members Garth Knox and Rohan de Saram (viola
and cello Sequenza's) has won the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis (2007)
·The Académie
Charles Cros has awarded the Arditti Quartet the Honorary Coup
de Coeur, for their contribution to the diffusion of the music of our
time. (2004)
·The
Deutschen Schallplattenkritik Preis was awarded for their recording of
Pintscher chamber music on Winter and Winter. (2004)
·'Nishimura's
Third Quartet 'Avian' which was recorded on the Arditti's recently released
Nishimura CD for Camerata has been awarded the National Arts Festival
Grand Prize by the Agency of Cultural Affairs in Japan. The is an annual
prize which is only given to one work and can be selected from either
the classical, contemporary or jazz world. The recordings took place in
May 2000 in Kusatsu, Japan in the presence of the composer. (2003)
·The
Gramophone Award in the category best contemporary CD was given for Birtwistle’s
‘Pulse Shadows’on Teldec. This work includes Claron McFadden,
soprano and the Nash Ensemble, as well as the Arditti Quartet.
The work alternates between Birtwistle’s 9 quartet movements and
his ‘Celan Songs’. (October

·The
Gramophone Award in the category best recording of contemporary
chamber music was given for their CD of Elliott Carters chamber
music on Naive-Montaigne. (October 1999)
·The
Deutsche Schallplattenpreis was awarded for their recording of Rihm String
Quartets on Naive-Montaigne (1993)
·The
Deutsche Schallplattenpreis was awarded for their recording of Xenakis
Chamber Music on Naive-Montaigne (1992)
·International
Music Critics Prize. For exemplary work in service to contemporary string
quartets and a superb discography which contributes to the understanding
of the music of our time. (Awarded in the Salle Olivier Messaien, Maison
de la Radio, Paris on 6th December 1992)
·A
nomination for a Grammy Award was given for the recital recording entitled
Arditti 2 on Gramavision. (January 1991)
·Le
Monde de la Musique, 'Choc' was awarded for their recording of
Ferneyhough Quartets (1-3) on Naive-Montaigne (1991)
·Le
Monde de la Musique, 'Choc' was awarded for their recording of
complete Webern String music on Naive-Montaigne (1991)
·Le
Monde de la Musique, 'Choc' was awarded for their recording of
Kurtag, Lutoslawski and Gubaidulina on Naive-Montaigne (1991)
·Le
Monde de la Musique, 'Choc' was awarded for their recording of Scelsi
music originally on Salabert Actuel but re-issued on Montaigne Naive (1990)
·The
Grand Prix du Disque Academie Charles Clos, the Diapason D'Or and the
International Record Critics' award was given for the Elliott Carter's
String Quartets 1-4 on Etcetera records (1989)
·Le
Monde de la Musique, 'Choc' and Diapason D'Or was awarded for John Cage
String Quartets on Mode records. (1989)
·The
Deutsche Schallplattenpreis was awarded for their recording of Henze String
Quartets on Wergo records (1985)
·The
Diapason D'Or was awarded for their recording of the 2 Ligeti Quartets
on Wergo records
·The
Gramophone Award in the category best contemporary CD was given for
their RCA red seal recording of quartets by Carter, Ferneyhough and Harvey
(1984)
